What is Vinyl Lettering

Vinyl lettering consists of individually cut letters made from high-quality adhesive vinyl. Unlike printed stickers that have a background, our lettering is precision-cut from solid coloured vinyl sheets, meaning only the letters themselves are applied to your surface – no background material remains once applied. This produces a clean, professional look as if the design were painted on. Each letter is pre-spaced and held together with application tape for easy, professional installation.

Vinyl stickers are a very cost-effective and long-lasting signage solution, used on everything from storefront windows and vehicles to banners and home decor. Vinyl is also very versatile – we can cut single-colour designs or even digitally print full-colour images on vinyl, depending on your needs.

What's the difference between cut vinyl and printed vinyl?

Cut vinyl is made from solid-coloured vinyl sheets and cut to shape – perfect for simple text and logos in solid colours. It has a painted-on appearance with no background.

Printed vinyl allows for full-colour designs, gradients, shadows, and photographic images. We print on white vinyl then cut to shape. This is ideal for complex multi-colour designs.

Ordering & Design

For cut vinyl stickers & lettering, we recommend vector file formats such as:
  • PDF (with vector content)
  • EPS (Encapsulated PostScript)
  • AI (Adobe Illustrator)
  • SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)
However, if you don’t have a vector file, a high-quality JPG or PNG is often fine. In many cases, we can recreate the design from your image at no extra cost. Just send through what you have and we’ll take a look.

For printed vinyl, we also accept high-resolution image files in formats like:
  • JPG
  • PNG
  • TIFF

Do you offer full-colour printing as well as cut vinyl?

Yes, we offer both single-colour cut vinyl and full-colour printed vinyl options. With cut vinyl lettering, we use pre-coloured vinyl rolls and a cutting machine to precisely cut your text or design out of the vinyl. This method is ideal for solid, single-colour designs and has no background – only the letters or shapes remain after application. In addition, we can produce full-colour printed decals: we print your design (including multi-colour logos, gradients, or photographs) onto vinyl using high-quality inks, then cut it to shape. This means you can get everything from one-colour business hours on a door to a multi-colour graphic logo for a vehicle. We’ll choose the best production method based on your design, and you can always specify your preference as well.

Can you match specific colours?

We stock over 30 standard vinyl colours. While we cannot guarantee exact Pantone or custom colour matching for cut vinyl, we’ll help you select the closest available option. For printed vinyl, we can achieve closer colour matching, though some variation may occur due to the printing process.

How are stickers priced?

Pricing is based on:
  • Size: Measured by the height and total width of your text
  • Quantity: Bulk orders receive discounts
  • Vinyl type: Standard, premium, reflective, or specialty materials
  • Complexity: Simple text vs. custom designs
Our online tool shows real-time pricing as you design.

Installation

What surfaces work best for vinyl lettering?

Vinyl adheres excellently to:
  • Glass (windows, mirrors, doors)
  • Painted walls (smooth or lightly textured)
  • Metal (vehicles, signs, doors)
  • Plastic (smooth, non-porous)
  • Sealed wood (painted or varnished)
Avoid:
  • Unpainted/unsealed wood
  • Fabric or canvas
  • Heavily textured surfaces
  • Freshly painted surfaces (wait 3-4 weeks)

How do I apply vinyl lettering without bubbles?

Follow these steps for bubble-free application:
  1. Clean the surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol
  2. Position your lettering using masking tape as a hinge
  3. Remove the backing paper at a shallow angle
  4. Apply from one side to the other using a squeegee
  5. Press firmly, working from centre outward
  6. Remove transfer tape slowly at a 45-degree angle
For detailed instructions with images, see our installation guide.

What if I make a mistake during installation?

We stand behind our products! If you damage your lettering during installation, contact us with photos. We offer replacement lettering at 50% off for installation errors reported within 7 days of delivery.

How do I install lettering on the inside of windows?

Select the “Reverse Cut” option when ordering in the design tool. Your lettering will be cut in mirror image, allowing you to apply it to the inside of glass while reading correctly from the outside.

Are your vinyl stickers weather proof?

Yes, all of the vinyl we use is premium grade vinyl, made for both outdoor and indoor use and will withstand wind, rain and sun.

Durability & Maintenance

How long will my vinyl lettering last?

  • Outdoor use: 7+ years for premium vinyl, 5+ years for standard
  • Indoor use: 10+ years or more
  • Vehicle use: 5-7 years with proper care
Factors affecting lifespan include sun exposure, climate, surface quality, and maintenance.

Will vinyl lettering damage my paint or walls?

Quality vinyl is designed to be removable without damage to properly prepared surfaces. However:
  • Very old or poorly adhered paint may lift
  • Some “easy clean” paints may not hold vinyl well
  • Extended outdoor exposure (5+ years) may cause slight fading differences
Always test a small area first if concerned.

How do I clean vinyl lettering?

  • Use mild soap and water with a soft cloth
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing
  • For vehicles, hand wash or use touchless car washes
  • Never use solvents (acetone, paint thinner) near vinyl
  • Pat dry to prevent water spots

How do I fix bubbles that appear after installation?

Small bubbles often disappear within 48 hours. For persistent bubbles:
  1. Pierce the center with a fine needle
  2. Press out air from the hole outward
  3. Warm slightly with hair dryer to reseal
For wrinkles, carefully lift the affected area and reapply.

Removal & Troubleshooting

How do I remove old vinyl lettering?

  1. Heat the vinyl with a hair dryer on low
  2. Lift a corner with a plastic scraper
  3. Pull slowly at a 45-degree angle
  4. Remove adhesive residue with citrus-based cleaner
  5. Clean surface with isopropyl alcohol

Why is my vinyl not sticking properly?

Common causes include:
  • Surface contamination (wax, oil, dust)
  • Low-quality or incompatible paint
  • Installation temperature too cold
  • Textured surface too rough
Solution: Clean thoroughly, ensure compatible surface, check temperature.

Can I reuse vinyl lettering after removal?

No, vinyl lettering is designed for one-time use. The adhesive loses its strength during removal, and letters often stretch or tear. Always order fresh vinyl for new applications.

What causes vinyl to lift at edges?

Edge lifting typically results from:
  • Inadequate initial pressure during installation
  • Surface contamination
  • Extreme temperature changes
  • Poor quality vinyl
  • Moisture getting under edges
Prevention: Ensure thorough surface prep and firm application pressure.

Special Applications

Can I apply vinyl over existing graphics?

We don’t recommend it. Applying over existing vinyl can cause:
  • Poor adhesion
  • Visible edges/ghosting
  • Premature failure
Always remove old graphics and clean thoroughly before applying new vinyl.

What about curved or complex surfaces?

Vinyl can conform to gentle curves. For complex applications:
  • Use cast vinyl (more flexible) instead of calendared
  • Apply with heat for better conformity
  • Consider professional installation for vehicle wraps
  • Break complex designs into sections
